One of the biggest fears that couples have is what if it rains on their wedding day? This is also one of the biggest frustrations because it is the most unpredictable part and something you cannot plan for. However, you can plan for how to make your wedding day magical, or even more magical if it rains.

The first step is to make sure you have an indoor backup plan for any day of event that is happening outdoors. Ask your venue about indoor or covered outdoor options they have, and troubleshoot based on their suggestions. Tented weddings are also a very good option, even if it isn’t raining, for shade. In that case, you would have the best of both worlds! At this point, it is also important to discuss this with your planner and vendors. A good planner will always have a weather backup from the jump and know how to discuss this with you and your vendors. If rain is in the forecast, it is always good to make decisions early to reduce stress, because after all, it’s much better to have it and not need it than not to have it at all.

Pictures are the second biggest consideration after the venue. A good investment is clear umbrellas instead of colorful ones. They are less distracting in pictures and let natural light in while keeping you and your partner protected from the rain. White umbrellas are a good secondary option as well. They are timeless, elegant, and make such a fun photo opportunity. It is great to use them for walking shots, first looks, and portraits. It is also a good idea to buy extras for the wedding party so that they can be dry for photos.

While on the topic of photos, it’s also a good idea to have indoor photo spots too. Tour your venue to identify these locations, and decide in person where you would like to do them. Some things to look for would be large windows, staircases, covered porches, elegant hallways, or even pretty walls. Another possible option would be to find a different nearby location if your venue doesn’t have exactly what you’re looking for. Nearby museums, hotels, or conservatories are options to consider, but it is important to contact them beforehand so they can accommodate you and your photographer. Lastly, it is important to trust your photographer. They have an eye for beauty and will make sure you get the photos you deserve.

Overcast skies create soft, flattering lighting while allowing colors and greenery to pop. Use the rain to your advantage to create romantic scenes. Puddles can make for unique reflection photos, and cozy pictures, cuddled up under an umbrella, will quickly become your favorite. 

Remember, since this is only in Mother Nature’s control, embracing the unexpected is the best way to celebrate your day and your partner’s. It is so easy to get caught up in the gloom of the day, but it is about the love that you share with your partner. You can turn anything into a good memory with good planning and a good mindset.
